Wal-Mart Opening "Twilight Stores" in March

Wal-Mart is hoping for a mad rush of teenagers next month, opening Twilight Shops in each of its many stores across the country, which will feature not only the DVD, but the soundtrack, clothes, posters, accessories, and, although implicitly, the stores will also sell abstinence by the truckload.

I shouldn’t have to tell you that this is an absolute A+ idea. Wal-Mart is already the biggest retailer in the country, with some 3,500 Main Street-crushing locations nationwide. But one of the first things they teach you in marketing is to get ‘em young. If you make somebody a Coke drinker early, they’ll likely stay with you forever. Brand loyalty, in other words.

And since Wal-Mart suffers from an image crisis as these teenagers start getting incomes of their own, what better way to tap into their consciousness than by giving them all the Twilight they could possibly want all at once? The theory is, when they see how much Wal-Mart has rolled back prices, they’ve got thousands of new customers. That’s what it’s all about. And it’s a great idea.
